Toronto Police Expand Search for Missing Senior with Dementia to Scarborough

Toronto police are intensifying efforts to locate a senior citizen with dementia, Norman Gray, known as “Bill,” who went missing from his North York home. Gray, aged 76, embarked on an afternoon walk on Tuesday and was last seen via surveillance footage in Scarborough on Wednesday evening.
Insp. Jeff Bangild updated reporters on Wednesday night, stating that the police command post had been moved to the Victoria Park Avenue and Ellesmere Road area following sightings of Gray in that vicinity. Bangild mentioned that information was pouring in from both the area where Gray resides and the new search area.
Gray left his residence near Torbarrie Road and Sheppard Avenue West, close to Highway 400, around 12 p.m. on Tuesday, more than 24 hours ago as of now. Described as approximately five-foot-ten with grey curly hair and brown eyes, he was last seen wearing a dark baseball hat, a red and blue shirt, blue jeans, a black jacket, and white shoes.
The police have collected a significant amount of video evidence related to Gray’s disappearance and are conducting a Level One search, mobilizing additional resources to expand the search area and follow up on leads effectively.
Gray, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, typically goes on walks accompanied by his wife of over 50 years. However, on this occasion, he ventured out alone. Kassandra Gray, one of his daughters, expressed the family’s concern during an earlier news conference, describing their extensive search efforts as “very traumatizing” and “exhausting.”
Kassandra mentioned that her father is passionate about nature and gardening, speculating that he might have become disoriented while admiring a garden. In response, the police are urging residents to thoroughly check their properties, including backyards, sheds, patios, and other potential hiding spots.
Although Gray had previously gone missing and returned on his own, this situation is different, leading to heightened concerns for his safety. The public is urged to contact the police at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously if they have any information about Gray’s whereabouts.
Insp. Bangild emphasized Gray’s gentle nature and encouraged anyone who encounters him to approach him, considering his likely hunger and thirst after being out for an extended period, especially on a warm day.
